Magic Mendez and Harmony Blackwell
The Whispers mysterious “Rock Steady” bass player is the groups long-time producer, Magic Mendez. The multi-instrumentalist has worked with the icons since 1993, composing, producing, recording and mixing on five of the last six Whispers albums. On their 2026 release, the historic 60th Anniversary album, Magic was assisted by Harmony in the production of 8 of the 12 featured tracks.
For over 30 years, veteran producer Magic has worked with seasoned recording artists such as Glodean & Linda (formally of Love Unlimited), Earth, Wind and Fire, The Emotions, Phil Perry, Gerald Alston, bassist Tony Saunders and many others.
During Covid in 2020, Magic produced, recorded and mixed his original 1987 social justice song "HOW LONG". Prior to releasing it and its music video, The Whispers asked to cover his original. Magic produced 'How Long' for them, followed by the production of two other originals from The Whispers' camp: “It’s Been Too Long” and “Maybe The Fire Isn’t Out.” By re- recording all the instruments, vocals and mixing Whisper songs for "The Whispers Ownership Catalog", the re-recordings return the use and income of their work to the group. The releases of "And The Beat Goes On", "Rock Steady", "Keep On Loving Me", "Olivia", plus the classic Donny Hathaway remake of "This Christmas" continue to delight fans. In 2026, the signature hits and singles morphed into "The Whispers 60th Anniversary" album: Remembering the PAST, Honoring the PRESENT, Embracing the FUTURE.
Singer/musician Harmony Blackwell started singing with a family choir in church at a young age. Joining forces with Magic as a teen, they formed a multicultural “tribe” of talented musicians and singers, Unified Tribe, who gained a sizeable following over the last decades for both its style and its grooves. This follows three decades of Whispers’ support with vocal recording, assistant engineering and production coordination. In 2016, Harmony became the first female to dawn the stage with The Whispers as Playback Engineer / Vocalist. She excels in this highly technical position, which is traditionally dominated by men. Known as "1st Lady Whisper", onstage she honors the awesome choreography of the late, great Whispers’ Nicholas Caldwell while adding inspiring movement and sound to The Whispers’ LIVE shows.
When Magic and Harmony aren’t busy with The Whispers, their creativity is constantly flowing as Me and My Friends, offering one-stop musical mastery in the studios of Magic Muzik Productions, LLC.
With empowering music and dynamic stage performances, Me and My Friends embraces diversity and unity with Vision, using music as a shining Starr to help guide the way!
